UK HEADLINES:
BBC: Young people hit as UK unemployment rate rises
The UK unemployment rate has risen to its highest level for two years, official figures show. The unemployment rate grew to 4.1% in the three months to July, compared with 3.9% previously. Young people were particularly hard hit, with those aged 16 to 24 suffering the biggest drop in employment compared with other age groups. Firms continue to remove staff from payrolls as they prepare for the end of the government’s furlough scheme. There were 156,000 fewer young people in employment in the three months to July compared to the previous quarter, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics.
BBC: Eat Out to Help Out scheme drives UK inflation to 5 year low
Cheaper restaurant meals due to the Eat Out to Help Out scheme saw prices rise at their slowest rate in five years. The UK’s inflation rate, which tracks the prices of goods and services, fell to 0.2% in August, from 1% in July. Low inflation – the rate at which prices of everyday goods and services rise – is good for consumers and borrowers, but can be bad for savers. That is because while it makes things cheaper, it also affects the interest rates set by banks and other firms.
Testing demand puts a strain on available resource
The coronavirus testing system has been struggling under the strain of increased demand in recent weeks. NHS Providers, which represents hospital trusts in England, says staff are having to self-isolate rather than work because they cannot get tests for themselves or family members. Schools are being hit by similar problems due to a lack of testing which could lead to partial closures. Parents are also being forced to keep children at home for days while waiting to get a test.

Covid-19 will force change in PRS – Private Rental Sector
Lockdown measures have left the UK’s residential rental sector struggling to deal with a period of unpaid rents, occupancy voids, and considerable operational difficulties. And with the pandemic far from over, such issues will continue to persist. Moreover, given that up to 90% of the UK’s private rented sector (PRS) is made up of single-property landlords, the sector will need to mature, adapt, and strengthen in order to overcome the pandemic. Yet, rather than dwell on the negatives, we must consider how the market can change for the better, and fast-track changes in PRS that benefit investors, landlords, and tenants in the wake of the virus.
