Retirement community developer, McCarthy Stone, has begun a public consultation on plans to convert the former Wilmslow Police Station into 55 apartments.
Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner put the 1.38-acre site on the market for residential development in February 2022 to enable the local police force’s move to new premises.
Developers plan to deliver 55 retirement apartments, along with communal facilities, on the former police station to meet Cheshire East’s growing demand for property for older residents. Developers also hope that the scheme could also help free up more family homes in the borough as older people downsize.
Ian Wilkins the divisional managing director for the North at McCarthy Stone said:
“Our plans provide a fantastic opportunity to deliver much-needed retirement living accommodation on a site allocated for housing.
“The site is ideally located for residents to access local shops and services, with connectivity to public transport links across the wider region.
“Our developments have wider benefits for the local economy, with our residents typically using local shops and services. This new community will therefore provide a vital boost to businesses in Wilmslow, helping to support local retail jobs and keep shops open.”
The public consultation is live online on the McCarthy Stone website along with more detailed plans for the scheme. Comments received will inform an upcoming planning application to Cheshire East Council in 2023.
Alongside their plans for Wilmslow Police Station, McCarthy Stone are also the developer delivering a new retirement community in Macclesfield on the former King’s School campus.
