Manchester Airport has confirmed that normal operations at all its terminals have resumed after electrical issues grounded flights on Sunday 23rd June.
The airport has advised passengers to prepare to travel as normal in a statement on social media, but warned that due to the numbers of passengers affected by the weekend’s disruption it expects to be busier than usual, and has put in extra staff in place.
A power cut affecting Terminals 1 and 2 at the airport saw 66 departures and 50 inbound flights cancelled due to a power surge and subsequent outage that damaged key equipment, including baggage and security systems. Terminal 3, however, was unaffected with only some delays occurring.
The power outage began early in the morning on Sunday 23rd June, with the airport announcing it had been restored by 7.45am although passengers were advised to contact airlines for information about their flights and rebook onto other flights where necessary. While only departures equipment was affected, a number of inbound flights were diverted to other airports as grounded planes was taking up the space needed for them to land and offload passengers at Manchester Airport.
In a video statement published on social media amid the disruption, Manchester Airport’s Managing Director Chris Woodroofe apologised to those whose flights were affected by the outage and explained the causes. He also gave his thanks to the airport’s personnel in the terminals for supporting passengers, as well as to the pilots and airline staff.
