RETAIL:
BRC: Footfall recovers ground as shops reopen
“With lockdown measures easing, consumers are slowly re-emerging onto their high streets, shopping centres and retail parks. Footfall levels are still well below pre-coronavirus levels; however, the decline was softer than it was in May thanks to the reopening of non-essential retail stores on 15 June. Retail parks have performed the best because they have a broad mix of retailers, more space and on-site parking, however, high streets and shopping centres are quickly catching up. UK recovery has been sluggish, especially compared with European standards, but retailers with stores remain hopeful that the reopening of hospitality will provide a welcome boost.”
Primark announces that it “does not intend” to accept £30m job retention bonus
A national fashion chain has said that it will not be accepting a £30m bonus from the UK government.
Primark, which is owned by Associated British Foods, announced that it will not be taking advantage of the government’s job retention scheme, which pays employers to retain staff after bringing them back from furlough.
Around 30,000 of Primark’s staff were furloughed due to coronavirus, meaning that the company is eligible to receive a bonus of £30m.
A spokesman for Primark owner Associated British Foods said: “I can confirm that Primark does not intend to take advantage of support under the Job Retention Bonus announced by the chancellor. The company removed its employees from government employment support schemes in the UK and Europe in line with the reopening of the majority of its stores. The company believes it should not be necessary therefore to apply for payment under the bonus scheme on current circumstances.”
John Lewis joins Primark to reject job retention bonus
After furloughing 14,000 shop workers, John Lewis is not expected to make use of the Chancellor’s new Job Retention bonus scheme which would pay John Lewis £1,000 for every worker returned to employment and reduce the potential impact on the unemployment figures. Last week John Lewis confirmed that it would not be reopening 8 of its 50 stores
UK Furniture retailer DFS to cut jobs as sales fall during lockdown
A UK furniture retailer has announced that it will be cutting jobs as it restructures following lockdown. DFS Furniture, which owns brands including DFS, Sofa Workshop and Sofology, has confirmed that it is taking “necessary actions” following a £271m dip in revenues this year. The retailer has not confirmed how many jobs are at risk as it restructures its Sofa Workshop and Dwell brands, but said that the reduction in headcount will incur restructuring costs of less than £2m.
AO benefits from new shopping model during lockdown
Online electrical retailer, AO World, reported annual results for the year to March 31, which saw it break the billion-pound turnover mark. The group improved total revenues from £902.5m to £1.046bn, while a pre-tax profit of £1.5m compared with a £20.2m pre-tax loss the previous year. Total UK revenue was up 20.3% to £901.6m, although European revenues decreased by 4.6% to €165.4m due to the closure of AO.nl, the Netherlands website, in the third quarter as the group re-aligned its European operating model with UK policy.
