UK NEWS & HEADLINES:
More than 10 million people receive first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in UK
Significant milestone reached as almost 1 in 5 adults in the UK get the vaccine
- 9 in 10 of those aged 75 and over in England have received their first dose
- vaccines offered to all elderly care home residents and staff in England and Wales
More than 10 million people in the UK have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, marking a significant milestone for the largest vaccination programme in British history. Figures out today show the NHS vaccinated a total of 10,021,471 million people between 8 December 2020 and 2 February 2021, including 9 in 10 people aged 75 and over in England. This is equivalent to vaccinating the total capacity of 111 Wembley stadiums in just 8 weeks and is an important step towards hitting the Prime Minister’s target of offering vaccines to the top 4 priority groups by the middle of February. These top 4 groups account for 88% of COVID deaths, which is why the vaccines will play such a crucial role in saving lives and reducing the demand on the NHS.
Trial to mix Covid vaccines
Could mixing different Covid vaccines provide as good – or even better – protection than two shots of the same drug? That’s exactly what a UK trial aims to find out, with more than 800 volunteers over the age of 50 in England to be given the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab followed by the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine – or vice versa – four or 12 weeks apart. Other vaccines may be added as they are approved by regulators.
International arrivals of UK residents face 10 days quarantine
From 15th February, arrivals from Covid variant hotspots will have to stay in a hotel for 10 nights. The hotel quarantine requirements are being introduced in an effort to control the spread of new variants of coronavirus first identified in South Africa and Brazil, which scientists believe may be more infectious and may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines. The rules affect UK residents and Irish nationals travelling from 33 countries on the “red list” – which covers much of South America, southern Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Portugal.
Government confirms mandatory hotel quarantine to be introduced from 15 February
From 15 February anyone travelling to the UK from a country on the UK’s travel ban list will be required to quarantine in a government-approved facility for 10 days.

BTR set to double by 2025 and new collective co-living
Build to Rent (BTR) specialist Ascend Properties has forecast that completions in the sector will double by 2025, as the fast-growing sector continues to boom.
BTR properties are usually owned by funds, institutional investors and real estate investment trusts (REITs), and unlike regular types of housing are designed and built specifically for tenants. Extending Stamp Duty Holiday top of 10 demands in Chancellor’s March budget “We’re particularly concerned about the impact of the stamp duty holiday ending with a cliff edge in March as this could cause thousands of sales to fall at the final hurdle and have a knock on and drastic effect on the housing market which has recovered well from the Covid-19 slump” explains Mark Hayward, chief policy adviser at the organisation. The full 10 demands are:
1. Extend the cut to Stamp Duty Land Tax
2. Expand Help to Buy to the second-hand homes market
3. Establish a mortgage guarantee scheme for key workers
4. Restart the empty homes community grants programme
5. Provide a financial support package for the private rented sector
6. Raise local housing allowance
7. Ensure universal credit is adequate and more effective
8. Reopen courts to deal with the backlog of housing cases
9. Support investment in the private rented sector
10. More social housing
Agents urge for ‘tapered end’ to Stamp Duty Holiday
Estate agents have kept up the pressure on the Westminster government to consider some kind of tapered ending to the stamp duty holiday. Earlier this week a virtual debate amongst MPs showed a substantial number from both main parties advocating some sort of phased extension, purely for those buyers already part way through transactions.
