EU, EEA and Swiss citizens living in Cheshire East are being urged to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme before the 30th June deadline in order to remain living and working in the UK after that date.
Applications to the EU Settlement Scheme should be made online through the GOV.UK website. Applying to the scheme is free. Applicants must have been resident in the UK by 31st December 2020 to be eligible.
As of the end of March 2021, the Home Office confirmed that 5.3 million Europeans resident in the UK had applied to the scheme. However, there remain people yet to apply to the scheme who may lose out on rights and benefits of settled status. Steve Hughes, COO of Citizens Advice services in nearby Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford said:
“The deadline to apply for settled and pre-settled status is fast approaching.
“We are finding that in some cases, people simply aren’t aware that they need to apply, and that by missing the upcoming deadline they could lose the right to live and work in the UK.
“We encourage those who have not yet applied for settled or pre-settled status to do so as soon as possible, to allow time to complete the application and gather any evidence you may need.”
Those who have successfully applied to the EU Settlement Scheme can access their pre-settled or settled status online on the government website.
