Eurovia, the contractor delivering public realm improvements in Macclesfield town centre on behalf of Cheshire East Council, has committed to using electric-only plant equipment for the works.
The project to improve Castle Street in Macclesfield town centre will see more scope for cafés and restaurants to have outdoor seating, with footways being widened and resurfaced with natural stone.
Granite cobblestone-style paving in the road, new street furniture and enhanced lighting will also be added as part of the work.
Works are being funded by Cheshire East Council, and as a result, contractors on the scheme, Eurovia, will use electric-only plant equipment to minimise the carbon impact of the work. Cheshire East Council has set the ambitious target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2025, and minimising emissions from council works will go towards achieving this.
Jo Wise, Development and Regeneration Delivery Manager at Cheshire East Council said;
Cheshire East Council has set out some extremely challenging targets in our Carbon Neutral Action Plan.
“As part of this commitment, we are encouraging all businesses, residents and organisations in Cheshire East to limit their carbon footprint by reducing energy consumption.
“We are delighted that Eurovia Contracting has chosen our Castle Street scheme in Macclesfield to go entirely electric. This innovative thinking will certainly help us to hit our own targets.”
Work on the project began after Easter with improvements set to be completed fully in six months. The improvements are hoped to attract further investment to neighbouring property in Macclesfield town centre.
