UK NEWS UPDATES:
Furlough scheme ends as businesses call for further support
Furlough was introduced during the first lockdown, it helped pay 11.6 million wages after coronavirus restrictions meant large parts of the economy closed but now, after 18 months, the UK’s furlough scheme is ending. Furlough – or the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme as it’s officially known – was brought in by the government to pay 80% of wages, with a monthly limit of £2,500. That dropped to 60% with employers making up the rest as it started winding down for its closing date today. Chancellor Rishi Sunak says he’s “immensely proud” of the multibillion-pound scheme – which is still supporting 1.6 million workers, according to latest figures. It’s been widely praised for protecting millions of jobs but some firms say they still need support because business hasn’t returned to normal.
UK lockdown rebound stronger than first thought
The economic rebound triggered by the easing of Covid restrictions during spring was stronger than initial estimates, official figures show. From April to June the UK’s economy grew by 5.5%, which was higher than the previous estimate of 4.8%, the Office for National Statistics said. Spending on retail and hospitality surged after lockdowns lifted. However, the UK economy was still 3.3% smaller than in the final quarter of 2019, before the pandemic hit. Household spending was the biggest contributor to the economic boost, which came after restrictions eased to allow outdoor dining in April. Health services and the arts also performed better than the ONS had thought at first.
Face-to-face GP consultation levels still near lockdown levels
The rate of face-to-face GP consultations in England has changed little since the winter lockdown, data shows. Just 58% patients were seen face-to-face in August – the first full month following the ending of restrictions. That compares with 54% in January and over 80% before the pandemic. Analysis of the NHS Digital data by the BBC also shows significant variation with some areas seeing less than half in-person, but others close to 75%. GPs said rising demand and shortages of staff meant they were struggling to see more people face-to-face.
Virgin Money to close 30 stores
Virgin Money is to close 20% of its store network as it responds to the long-term shift in customers choosing to bank online. 112 jobs will be lost, although the group says it intends to “find alternative roles wherever possible” for affected staff. It will close 30 stores early next year at a cost of £25m as it accelerates its digital strategy, leaving it with 131 branches nationwide.
Nationwide: Rapid house prie growth continues in September
Annual house price growth of 10% or more has been recorded for each of the past five months, according to data from the Nationwide. The UK’s largest building society said that prices in September were up 10% compared with a year earlier, a slight slowdown from 11% in August. The double-digit rise was driven by recent activity in Wales and Northern Ireland, the lender said, with London still seeing the slowest growth. The typical home now costs £248,742.
£500m in new grants to help poorest households
The government has announced £500m of grants to help families struggling with the cost of living as other support schemes are withdrawn. The move comes as rising prices, including spiralling energy bills, are making it harder for those on low incomes to make ends meet. The end of furlough and the £20 weekly top-up to universal credit will also remove support provided during Covid. The new fund will help households pay for essentials like food and bills. Local councils in England will distribute small grants to support millions of households, the government said.
The cash will be made available in October. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive up to £79m of the £500m.

£5m to be spent on self-employed agents
An online operator called Nested is to spend £5m to promote the self-employed estate agency concept in 100 parts of the country – and it says it is gunning to be the number one company in that space. Back in March this year Nested – which had already secured £20m in past funding – announced that it was to receive £5m from the German Axel Springer publishing empire, which also invested in Purplebricks. Nested’s own model formerly offered a ‘guaranteed buy’ of a vendor’s property if it did not sell within a set period for a minimum price, but now the agency has changed direction and is promoting what chief executive Matt Robinson calls “our Modern Estate Agent offering”.
Safeagent opposes grants and loans to clear arrears
Not-for-profit accreditation scheme safeagent wants the government to help tenants clear Covid-related arrears through an overhaul of Discretionary Housing Payments. Enhancing these payments – which can be made to tenants in need by councils – would be the most effective way to support those who are in arrears as a result of the pandemic, it claims. This marks out safeagent from most industry bodies, which have recently united to call on government to institute emergency grants and interest-free loans to help tenants clear pandemic debts to landlords.
